Rain fell inside Chase Field causing the D-backs to call their spring training game against the Guardians on Monday. Yes, you read that right.

PHOENIX — For the first time ever during a baseball game at Chase Field, rain fell inside the stadium, causing the Arizona Diamondbacks to call their spring training game against the Cleveland Guardians in the sixth inning.

Yes, you did read that right. Rain fell inside Chase Field.

Doesn’t Chase Field have a roof? How did rain fall inside the stadium? 12News is here to answer your questions.

Yes, Chase Field does have a retractable roof. However, due to a cable issue, the team has not been able to open or close the roof with fans inside for the past few seasons.

The D-backs had the roof open for their game against Cleveland on Monday night, so when a stray storm rolled through, they were unable to close the roof, and keep rain off the field.

Due to the rain (and this being a spring training game that does not count), the D-backs and Guardians decided to call their game in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Social media reacts to rain at Chase Field

As the rain was falling, fans at the game made sure to show it off on social media.

Torrence Dunham was in the pool as the rain fell and posted this video on X

Jesús Cano posted this video showing fans headed for cover in the concourse as the rain fell.

Another fan, who goes by ‘Goldschmidt Happened’ on X, posted a video and picture of the rain on Monday night.

This is not the first time rain at the home of the D-backs has cut a game short, however.

Back in Dec. 2006, an ASU women’s basketball game was cut short with more than four minutes left as rain fell in the stadium with the roof open, according to 12News journalist Cameron Cox.
