TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – A new era of Arizona Football has begun!

The Wildcats kicked off spring practice Tuesday.

Arizona opened up spring football Tuesday. It was the first of the Wildcats’ 15 practices, all open to the public.

Players were back on the Dick Tomey practice fields, now led by one of his pupils in Head Coach Brent Brennan. The new coaching staff preparing to lead the Cats into a new conference, the Big 12.

The first practice was relatively light. Players didn’t wear pads yet, just helmets, jerseys and pants. It was all about getting back into the swing of things and starting to gel together as a team.

Quarterback Noah Fifita and receiver Tetairoa McMillan already looked in midseason form with several impressive connections.

There are several new faces to look out for, like in the running back room. Rayshon ‘Speedy’ Luke returns, but there are additions like Quali Conley, who followed Brennan from San Jose State. Redshirt Freshman Brandon Johnson, Salpointe Catholic grad Anthony Wilhite and Freshman Jordan Washington also participated in drills.

McMillan is the top guy in the receiver room. Montana Lemonious-Craig, Kevin Green Jr. and AJ Jones also got a chunk of reps during the first day.

Arizona’s defense has plenty of returning players. That includes Defensive Lineman Bill Norton, Linebacker Jacob Manu and DBs Gunner Maldonado, Tacario Davis, Dalton Johnson and Treydan Stukes. That group became the heart of the defense and helped lead the Wildcats to an Alamo Bowl win last December.

Brennan said spring ball is a huge opportunity to for his players to grow.

“Everybody wants to play, but the beauty of spring practice is you don’t have an opponent that you’re getting ready to play,” Brennan said. “You can really dive into the fundamentals. You can dive into technique. You could dive into the scheme. Everybody gets an opportunity to practice and show themselves and I think that part of it was really, really fun.”

Practices continue this week on Thursday and Saturday. All practices are open to the public. You can purchase Arizona Spring Game tickets here.
