The Avondale Fire and Medical Department has teamed up with the Arizona Burn Foundation to enhance fire safety in the Old Town Avondale neighborhood by distributing smoke alarms to at least 200 homes.

On March 23, volunteers from the Arizona Burn Foundation and the city of Avondale will embark on a door-to-door campaign to deliver free smoke alarms and offer educational resources on their proper installation and use.

This initiative aims to increase awareness about fire safety and empower residents to take proactive measures to safeguard their homes and protect themselves and their families from the dangers of fire.

Residents within the designated area are eligible to receive smoke alarms, provided free of charge. Volunteers will ensure that each household receives a battery-operated smoke alarm and receives essential fire safety education.

Statistics from the National Fire Protection Association underscore the importance of having functioning smoke alarms. It shows that roughly three out of five fire deaths occur in homes without smoke alarms or with nonworking smoke alarms. More than one-third — 38% — of home fire deaths result from fires in which no smoke alarms are present. Homes with working smoke alarms experience a 50% reduction in the risk of dying in a home fire.

“The Avondale Fire and Medical Department and the Arizona Burn Foundation are committed to promoting fire safety and saving lives in the community,” Avondale Fire Chief Larry Rooney said. “We are grateful to the volunteers who will be in Old Town Avondale this month distributing fire alarms to help keep our residents safe.”

Residents of the Old Town Avondale area have the option to preregister for this service to ensure they receive a smoke alarm, during the outreach date. Preregistration can be completed online.
