One teen dead after vehicle submerges in the canal, YCSO says

YUMA, AZ, (March 24, 2024) – The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) says a vehicle plunged into the Gila Gravity Canal on Sunday evening, resulting in the death of a 15-year-old boy.

Jakob Kelley’s life was tragically cut short after the vehicle in which he was a passenger plunged into the Gila Gravity Canal on Sunday evening in Yuma County, according to the report.

The family members identified the teen as Jakob Kelley.

According to the crash report, Kelley was a passenger in a 1998 Dodge Dakota that was traveling westbound on the Gila Gravity Canal Road. Deputies said the driver of the Dodge, a 17-year-old boy, failed to make a turn, left the road on the south side, and rolled over into the canal.

Tragically, Kelley remained trapped inside the vehicle and later died at the scene.

A fundraiser has been created to help Kelley’s family cover funeral arrangements and insurance issues.

An investigation is underway, and anyone with information about the case is urged to call YCSO at 928-783-4427.

Most crashes — around 90 percent — occur due to factors a person behind the wheel can choose to control. Driving at a high rate of speed, being impaired, operating recklessly, or distracted driving are leading causes of fatal collisions in our country. A motorist can easily avoid these behaviors and save numerous lives.

Every day in 2022, there was an average of 3 to 4 persons killed in crashes, and there were 144 people injured, according to the latest crash report from the Arizona Department of Transportation. Of the 119,991 crashes in Arizona this year, 1,178 were fatal.

A motor vehicle accident may result in physical and other injuries that can completely alter and add substantial expense to an individual’s daily life routine. It is important that victims immediately reach out to an experienced attorney with the resources and know-how to guide them through this life-changing event and help them obtain fair compensation.

“In order to get a full picture of the events leading up to a deadly motor vehicle accident and to prove negligence, it is important that resources are properly utilized,” said Rebecca Setlow, an attorney and legal analyst at Fidelity Legal.

Pending the results of the investigation, the family members of Jakob Kelley may be entitled to a wrongful death claim for the loss of love and companionship.

“Losing your loved one to an accident is devastating. An experienced wrongful death attorney will know how to investigate and assess the legal liability of the person or entity that caused the accident, as well as evaluate a victim’s and their family’s monetary, physical and emotional damages,” Setlow added.

“It’s no secret that insurance companies want to settle claims for as little money as possible and that it is easier for them to do so when a victim is unrepresented. An experienced attorney is well versed in battling with insurance companies and can help you obtain the compensation you deserve for the damages you’ve suffered.”
