Fire officials are investigating the cause of a Thursday night fire that burned through the long-abandoned Old Spanish Trail motel.

The building was fully engulfed in flames about 10 p.m. when firefighters from Tucson and South Tucson arrived at the former motel near South Fourth Avenue and Interstate-10 to douse the blaze, said Paul Moore, a TFD deputy chief.

It was quickly determined the it was too dangerous to send crews into the dilapidated structure, so firefighters tackled the flames from outside, Moore explained. “We will risk a lot to save a savable life, but we will risk nothing to save nothing,” Moore said.

South Tucson Fire Captain Andy Luna said the building’s interior was cluttered with old furniture and equipment which “could have spread the fire.”

“It’s really crowded with things that have been in there for years and years,” Luna said. “It’s pretty packed.”
