Historic downtown Glendale building getting new restaurant

One of Downtown Glendale’s most historic buildings is getting a new restaurant.

Arizona-born Cornish Pasty Co. will be located on the ground level of the Gaslight Building, at 58th and Glendale avenues. The Cornish Pasty originates from Cornwall (Southwest England) and can be traced back as far as the 1200s. Cornish pasties are filled with steak, potatoes, swede (rutabaga) and onions.

The restaurant is expected to open next spring.

Cornish Pasty Co. has been expanding its reach across the Valley for 18 years.

“Bringing the Cornish Pasty brand to downtown Glendale marks another exciting phase in our community’s growth,” Daniel Sabillon, the city’s deputy director over downtown redevelopment, shared in a press release. “This new addition serves as a catalyst for the continued revitalization of the downtown area.”

The Gaslight, or Sine, Building opened in 1926 at 5747 W. Glendale Ave.

The building in years past housed the former Gaslight Inn bed and breakfast, and earlier this year saw the opening of Simple Machine Brewing Company and its adjacent live music venue on the ground level, and eight studio units plus three one-bedroom apartments on the second floor, converting the Inn’s former hotel portion to residential.

The Sine Building was purchased in February 2022 by local ownership group 119 Mesa LLC. The Maricopa County Recorder’s Office’s deed of trust shows a purchase price of $543,000 from the seller, SES 159 LLC, out of Utah.

“We are excited to be part of the Downtown Glendale community and look forward to sharing our passion for pasties and a good brew with you all,” Dean Thomas, Cornish Pasty owner, shared. “Our menu will feature over 40 different pasty creations, all made from scratch along with homemade soups, desserts, salads and unique appetizers. All set in a non-pretentious British pub atmosphere.”

The red brick building, built by Floyd Sine, was home to Brown’s Furniture Company, a structure that functioned as a store on the first floor accompanied by meeting spaces on the second level. Over time, the building has taken on a number of commercial businesses.
