Repairs to a water main could snarl traffic on a busy Rockford street for the next couple of days.
According to the press release from the Water Division at the City of Rockford Public Works, emergency repairs began today (Tuesday 8/29) in the 1000 block of E. State Street.
How Long Could Water Main Repairs Take?
East State Street will be reduced to one lane for all eastbound traffic at Charles St / W. Jefferson Street for 3 to 5 business days, according to the press release. Traffic will be reduced to one lane on 1st Ave / S Longwood St at Charles Street for all northbound traffic.
Motorists are encouraged to plan alternate routes that avoid the repair area, but those who are traveling through the work zone should use extreme caution and be alert for traffic control that will be in place.
City Engineer Provides Update on Charles Street Reconstruction
An update on the Charles Street upgrade was released today by the City of Rockford Engineer who said: “The roadway will be completely open to traffic in early to mid-November.”
The roadway reopening was delayed because of “utility pole relocation delays” which will keep Charles Street from 28th to Parkside Drive closed through October 9.
All businesses remain open throughout construction. The road closure will continue to be open to local traffic, deliveries, mail, garbage pickup, and emergency vehicles only. The detour route remains in place. City of Rockford Engineer
Once Charles Street is reopened, the roadway will “open up to 3 lanes, with the southernmost lane remaining closed to install the multi-use path and turf restoration.”
